UK Red Squirrels

Friday night was spent searching around on the net trying to find something a bit different to take pics of. After a few hours and speaking with my friend Ken it was decided that we would head north to try for some red squirrels. Batteries on charge, cards formated and time for bed to get a few hours sleep before a early start. Sat morning and 5am Ken turns up at my house, half alseep we headed north. The light was not good and in fact we spent most of the time driving through fog, as we got further north the fog lifted to our delight. I had found two potential sites and to our delight the first site paid off. Neither Ken or myself had seen or taken pics of red squirrels before so we really didn't know what to expect, with a few nuts placed around the area it didn't take long before they showed.

All in all a very good day and well worth the early start.

Quick visit to Norfolk

I was lucky enough to have a job in Norfolk so had the last few hours of light to take some pics. This is the first time I have visited Norfolk for over 15 years and have to say "what a amazing place it is".

Red Poll's

During the last two weekends I have had the chance to photograph some red polls. These are a first for me so I am chuffed to say the least.

The first weekend was spent with my good friend Ken and Martin after the Focus show, we also bumped into Pete which is always a pleasure.

The perches are very close to the hide and most shots are near full frame with the 400mm, this made me think about comp which is a nice thing to worry about after only using a 300mm before.

The light was also good which is a bonus.

Whilst taking to Pete he showed us some pics of the sparrow hawk which had visited earlier in the day. With this in mind I visited again the following weekend.

Early morning start and it is raining again :( however I met with Ken and we decided to head to the hide.

The light was bad to say the least and the first few hours were spent shooting at ISO 1600 which is always a worry with my 30D. I have to say with a little noise reduction I am quite happy with the results. Ian came along to join the fun which kept our spirits high :)

A good display of red polls again but now sign of the sparrow hawk after sitting in the hide for 7 hours :(

A few goldfinches also showed.

What will next weekend bring I ask myself ????
